FILM : Urbanised by Gary Hustwit

                                        FILM: Urbanized

by  Gary Hustwit

Urbanized is a documentary based on the cities design ,researching the issues and key points behind urban design and feature some of the most influential architects, urbanologists and builder teams. The movie follow their ideas about how we can transform the cities we live in, with smart designs and technology exploration in repairing the architectural mistakes made in the past and mindfully expand in the environment.

Joining Helvetica and Objectified,Urbanized is the third part of Gary's design film trilogy and is currently screening at film festivals and cinemas word wide.

Cities are almost always the physical manifestation of the big forces that apply, economical,
social, environmental all shaping the urban landscaping with their own touch, park are rising in the middle of the city centers ,replaced with sky builders that will have maybe a cafe shop  on the first floor, even a tennis playground on the roof, and after a few decades who knows how that place will transform, maybe there will be a park again ,a pool or a shopping center.

The introduction reveal the forever urbanising trend from pre roman pre Grek times till modern times

 Mumbai

First city subjected to urbanistic  evaluation was Mumbai with insalubrious condition, poverty and a growing population that is building their own shelterAlready, 60% of its population lives in slums with such poor sanitation that there is only one toilet seat for every 600 people. The need for improvement is not just a matter of aesthetics but one of hygiene safety and adequate human living conditions.

Brazil and the Garden City movement. modernistic concept ofGarden City movement appeared at  the end of the 19th century and it proved to be incredibly influential on the modernistic movement, the architecture was much like the modern design ,everything was separated ,professional looking and        .The idea would be to separate out the different functions of the city with greenbelts and concentrics however in practicability it raised the problem of constant traffic jams.

The construction of extra subtenant passages new streets  didn't seem to resolve the problem and it could not because what caused with congestion were not the insufficient streets but the huge huge amount of cars  so they restricted the parking areas to discourage people from purchasing cars and use the public transport instead. The public went hectic about not being able to find available spots for parking but Enrique Penalosa, the mayor of Bogata was short and inarguable, people see parking after buying a car like a right ,but if we had to look thru the constitution we won't be able to find any right related to the freedom of parking or anything as close as that. They invested in the public transport as well as reducing the bus stigma by major improvements especially in the subway system, additional bike pedestrial  routes all over the city and giving biker extra attention, from designing customs streets where there will be the pedestal then the bike lane and  then a special place for parking so the biker would be protected from the traffic.
As Peñalosa points out, riding on a mountain bike as he passes car squishing through the mud: this is democracy in action. Only by prioritizing pedestrians have cities rediscovered their vibrant centers.
